Chinese company China Huadian Engineering Co (CHEC) has won a tender to build a new 500MW electricity unit at Romania`s 1.42GW Rovinari thermal power plant, the country`s ministry of economy said on Wednesday (25th July). CHEC will invest more than $1bn (€826m) in the project. There is no set deadline for when the new unit will start commercial operations. At the end of March the Romanian government approved the merger of state-owned thermal operators Turceni, Rovinari, Craiova and coal mining company SNLO in order to strengthen the country`s energy security (see EDEM 17 March 2012).
