  • © ICIS HEREN - EBRD to fund Romanian plant modernisation
    2013-05-01

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is considering arranging a syndicated loan of up to €200m to Romania`s Complexul Energetic Oltenia to help finance the modernisation of unit 6 of the company`s Turceni lignite-fired power plant, it said in a statement on Friday (26th April).
The upgrade is expected to cut emissions by more than 300,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, and allow the plant to run for longer each day.
The 2.3GW Turceni plant is Romania`s largest thermal power plant, and generates around 10% of the country`s electricity consumption.
The loan is aimed to support Romania in meeting EU accession requirements by ensuring generating assets comply with the EU industrial emission directive, as of 2016.
