| Austrian energy major Verbund has plans to move into generation in Romania from the beginning of 2007, Heren Energy learnt on Thursday (9th November). A source told Heren Energy on the sidelines of an industry conference in Vienna that Verbund would operate a new subsidiary, Verbund Romania SRL, from 1st January next year. Bernhard Raberger, head of corporate development for Verbund, stated: “The first stage will be to buy assets in power plants, and after that, we will look for new generation projects with either green or brown fuel. We must decide what the next step will be.” He would not give more details of what these investments were planned to be. Verbund already has trading operations in the South East European market and generation capacity will support these activities. Romania’s thermal generation company Termoelectrica is desperate to attract investment, already saddled by a EUR 1.2 million debt. The region as a whole faces supply shortages with the closure of two 440 MW units of the Kozloduy nuclear power plant in Bulgaria at the end of 2006, and Romania has stated that power imports for this winter are costing twice what domestic power costs.
