| Contrary to expectations in 2006, Bulgaria has closed two units of its Kozloduy nuclear power plant, removing 880 MW of export capacity. At the same time, the first 440 MW unit of Slovakia’s Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear power plant also stopped generating. Its 2006 output was around 3 TWh, according to a spokesman for the plant, with the second unit generating a similar amount and due to close in 2008. Both plants began their decommissioning on New Year’s Eve 2006, in line with their EU accession treaties. The loss of Kozloduy units three and four has led Bulgaria to declare that it will not be exporting power in 2007, causing prices in South East Europe to outstrip German levels. This is creating additional support for Central and Eastern European prices, already rising with the removal of Bohunice. Other capacity is being removed due to European environmental legislation, and traders expect prices for 2007 and 2008 to flatten to German levels. (THE HEREN REPORTS - EDEM 11001 / 2 January 2007) |
