  • ©ICIS HEREN - Romanian - Hungarian interconnector starts commercial flows
    2010-04-06
The new 400kv interconnector between Oradea, Romania and Bekescsaba in Hungary has had power flowing since the end of the week, although its official inauguration is planned for later this week, Romanian transmission system operator (TSO) Transelectrica told ICIS Heren on Tuesday (9th December). Transelectrica said about 100 MW of capacity has been used on the 60 km link so far, although maximum capacity of the interconnector is much larger. It is understood to reach about 1 GW. Transelectrica and Hungarian counterpart Mavir are expected to come out with an official statement providing more details later this week. To date, only one interconnector exists along the border shipping up to 250 MW from Romania to Hungary, while flows in the opposite direction are restricted to 100 MW. The project has been funded by both TSOs, as well as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, with the total investment reaching 34m. The interconnector is the first part of a three-stage upgrade of the Romanian grid. Transelectrica is considering building new links to Moldova, Serbia and a subsea link to Turkey (see EDEM 12.232) (THE ICIS HEREN REPORTS - EDEM 12 240 / 9 December 2008)
