Romanian transmission system operator Transelectrica and its Hungarian counterpart Mavir have officially inaugurated the new 1 GW power interconnector between Arad, Romania and Bekescsaba in Hungary, Transelectrica said on Friday (12th December). The 94 km link has been in operation since late last week. The interconnector is the first line to be built in the region during the past 20 years, and is of major importance for the two countries power systems, according to Transelectrica. It will join the already existing line that allows shipping up to 250 MW from Romania to Hungary, while flows in the opposite direction are restricted to 100 MW.
