| Romania’s 2,310 MW Turceni power plant is to receive �170m to cut emissions and increase efficiency. This will make it one of the least CO2 – intensive lignite plants in Europe, according to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, one of the project financiers. The money will fund the upgrade of Unit 6. Unit 3 is also due to upgraded to comply with EU environmental standards. Romanian power producers had a much smaller shortfall of EU allowances than west European countries in 2008, representing just 2% of its cap, or 736,000 tonnes of CO2. The upgrade is set to accentuate the already existing trend of falling emissions, as power demand from Romanian industry has plummeted following the recession. The complex is one of Romanian’s largest, generating 12.5% of the country’s power last year, according to the company. (THE ICIS HEREN REPORTS - EDCM 4.139 / 21 July 2009) |
