Bulgaria’s new prime minister Boyko Borisov announced plans to break up Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) within a matter of weeks, according to reports from regional newswires. In another attempt to make his mark on the energy sector and discredit the previous administration, he told Bulgarian television, “This is a structure that nobody needs.” Earlier this week the new government announced three new members of nuclear plant Kozloduy’s board of directors on Tuesday (25th August), making rapid and sweeping changes in management at BEH’s subsidiaries. The holding company was created last year to include the state’s energy and telecoms assets, valued at 4.3bn (see EDEM 18 September 2008). It includes the Kozloduy nuclear reactor, power plants Mini Maritza Iztok and Maritza East II, power incumbent utility NEK, power grid operator Bulgargaz, and gas grid operator Bulgartransgaz.
