  • ©ICIS HEREN - Romanias Cernavoda moves forward
    2010-04-06
Romania’s answer to its coming power shortage has taken a step closer, with a technical consultant chosen to develop new nuclear units Cernavoda 3 and 4. The joint venture EnergoNuclear has selected an engineering consortium including AMEC, Iberdrola and Tractebel to conduct engineering works in a pre-project phase for the reactors’ construction. The contract was originally announced back in July, and was reportedly worth 8m. The AMEC-Iberdrola-Tractebel consortium was the only participant, according to local news wire reports sourced from the Romanian economy ministry’s website. EnergoNuclear was formed in April this year, with Romania’s Nuclearelectrica holding a 51% stake (see EDEM 8 April 2009). Other stakeholders include Italy’s Enel, CEZ from the Czech Republic, Spain’s Iberdrola, Germany’s RWE, ArcelorMittal Romania and Belgian utility GDF SUEZ. The estimated total cost of developing the two 720MW units is 4bn. Construction is due to begin next year, with the first unit ready by 2015. The extra nuclear capacity is essential. Earlier this week, Romanian transmission system operator Transelectrica forecast a reduced supply margin going out to 2013, despite a 30% increase in installed capacity out to 2013, as demand could increase by as much as 44% (see EDEM 14 October 2009).
