| Romania is considering expanding its nuclear plans, according to a statement from the energy ministry on Thursday (6th May). "If all goes to plan we are also considering a second nuclear power plant which will be located in an area chosen by government specialists," said Tudor Serban, a senior official in the energy ministry. The existing two reactors at the country`s sole nuclear unit Cernavoda have a combined installed capacity of 1.4GW, and covered 21% of the country`s power consumption in 2009. The two new units will each have a capacity of 740MW, and could boost this to 40% by 2017, when they are expected to be completed (see EDEM 16 October 2010). Romania`s nuclear production in the first quarter fell 4.7% year on year, according to official data released this week. Meanwhile, the country`s total power production dropped 4.3% on the year in the first quarter of 2010, mainly on the back of a decline in coal-power generation.
