| Enel backs boost to Romanian wind power Enel Green Power in Romania has signed an agreement with Romanian group Elcomex to develop a large wind farm in Dobrogea. The project will add 272MW of installed capacity to the Romanian grid, according to a statement released on Friday (16th July). Enel Green Power has the option to buy the company owning the project once authorisation has been given. Enel Green Power would not specify when the additional capacity was expected to be added to the grid. Romania had just 14MW of wind power at the end of 2009, but the Romanian wind energy association AREE estimates that the country could reach 650MW by the end of this year. According to the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), up to 3GW of wind capacity could come online in the next three years. However, transparency, spatial planning and approval of environmental impact assessments are still barriers for wind power in Romania, according to a statement from EWEA earlier this week. "Although lead times and costs are better in Romania than in many other EU countries, there are very few wind farms online, so we cannot say if the positive trend will continue," said Dorina Iuga, EWEA's projects manager. "It's basically a matter of streamlining decision making processes in a country that does not have much experience with renewable energy grid integration and project development."
