    Czech power utility CEZ has started talks with minority shareholders at its Romanian distribution company Electrica Oltenia, a spokeswoman confirmed to ICIS Heren on Wednesday (8th July). But the company refused to provide any details on discussion.

    Romanian gas company Romgaz and Russian giant Gazprom are planning to establish a joint venture to build gas storage facilities and thermal power plants in Romania, the Romanian media reported, citing Romanian Economy Minister Adriean Videanu on Tuesday (26th May).

    Romanian gas incumbent Romgaz is to build a 600MW thermal energy plant in central Transilvania, requiring a projected investment of �720m, the company’s general manager told the regional Newsin agency on Friday (24th April).

    Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has received an order for 76 turbines, which will be installed over two sites in Romania. Once installed, the turbines collectively will have a capacity of 228MW. Portuguese utility EDP Renováveis placed both orders, Vestas said.

    State-owned supply and distribution company Electrica is considering building 150MW of wind capacity and 50MW of micro-hydro power in partnership with undisclosed Chinese investors, local media reported this week.

    Romanian state-owned power company Nuclearelectrica will invest ROM60m (�14.4m) into the construction of Units 3 and 4 of its nuclear power plant Cernavoda in 2009. The investment will be its first capital subscription to the project, in which it owns 51%, Nuclearelectrica confirmed on Wednesday (8th April).

    State-owned Hidroelectrica is set to launch a tender for foreign utilities, as well as European investment banks, to co-finance its proposed 1GW pumped storage plant in Tarnita, in the northwest of Romania. The plant, which will have four 250MW turbines, is expected to cost �1.3bn.

    Romanian oil and gas incumbent Petrom plans to commission its first gas-fired, 860 MW power plant in 2011, company CEO Mariana Gheorghe told ICIS Heren on Monday (30th March) on the sidelines of Energy in Central and Eastern Europe conference in Prague. The plant will be located in Brazi, outside the capital Bucharest.

    Romania’s Nuclearelectrica, the state-owned nuclear power company leading the Cernavoda expansion project told ICIS Heren on Wednesday (11th March) that the new nuclear consortium will officially be created next week.

    Romanian transmission system operator Transelectrica and its Hungarian counterpart Mavir have officially inaugurated the new 1 GW power interconnector between Arad, Romania and Bekescsaba in Hungary, Transelectrica said on Friday (12th December).

    The new 400kv interconnector between Oradea, Romania and Bekescsaba in Hungary has had power flowing since the end of the week, although its official inauguration is planned for later this week, Romanian transmission system operator (TSO) Transelectrica told ICIS Heren on Tuesday (9th December).

    The Hungarian and Romanian transmission system operators (TSOs) plan to have a new 400kV interconnector operational by 10 December, Mavir, the Hungarian grid operator told ICIS Heren on Thursday (27th November). According to the Romanian grid operator, Transelectrica, the 60 km link, which will run from Oradea in Romania to Bekescsaba in Hungary, is currently undergoing final tests.

    CEZ has signed a memorandum of understanding with Romanian company Termoelectrica to establish a joint venture (JV) in order to upgrade its Galati power station, it announced on Thursday (20th November). The Czech incumbent will be the majority shareholder in the company.

    Romania’s economy ministry confirmed that all six companies that had shown initial interest in the expansion plans of the Cernavoda nuclear plant had been signed up to build units 3 and 4 of the plant.

    EDP Renewables, part of Portuguese incumbent utility EDP, announced on Friday (24th October) that it has acquired an 85% stake in Renovatio Power and Cernavoda Power, two renewables companies in Romania.
